Smaller van conversion with the basics rather than a purpose-built layout? Our campervan insurance may fit better, or call and we'll point you the right way.

Which licence do you need?

It comes down to weight, specifically the Maximum Authorised Mass. Under 3,500 kg, your standard Category B car licence is enough, and that covers a wide range of models. Between 3,500 and 7,500 kg you need a C1 licence; over 7,500 kg, which mostly means larger American RVs, you need a full C licence.

If you're not sure which side of a line your motorhome falls, call 01323 416706 before you buy the policy (or the vehicle). It's a two-minute check that avoids an expensive mistake. For the policy itself, drivers must be aged 25 to 79, with the proposer aged 30 or over.

Cover that goes beyond the driving

A motorhome is self-contained living, so the policy has to cover more than the journey. Our comprehensive policies include awning, gas bottle and generator cover up to £2,000, emergency accommodation for up to 14 days, personal effects cover for camping and caravanning equipment, and in-car audio and visual equipment cover up to £500. Awning cover handles storm damage; windscreen cover deals with the chips and cracks that touring roads hand out.

The headline for European tourers: continental use for up to 270 days comes as standard, with no green card required, enough for a serious multi-month trip across EU countries. Protected no claims bonus is also available, so one claim doesn't undo years of careful driving.

Campervan or motorhome: which policy do you need?

A campervan is typically smaller, with basic sleeping, washing and cooking provisions. A motorhome is larger and purpose-built for self-contained living: clearly defined sleeping, living and driving areas, with permanent sinks, cupboards and facilities. The DVLA classifies motorhomes as motor caravans. Either way, standard car or van insurance may not cover the living equipment and contents, which is why both need specialist cover.

On this page we insure the full range: classic motorhomes, coach-built models, A-Class motorhomes, professional campervan conversions and American-style RVs. Whatever the size or style, we'll find the right policy, and if your vehicle is really a campervan, we'll simply quote you on the right product instead.

See all FAQs
Can I drive a motorhome on a car licence?

Yes, if it weighs under 3,500 kg (Maximum Authorised Mass): a standard Category B car licence covers a wide range of models. Between 3,500 and 7,500 kg you need a C1 licence, and over 7,500 kg requires a full C licence. Unsure which category your motorhome falls into? Call 01323 416706 and we'll check.

What types of motorhome do you insure?

All of them: classic motorhomes, coach-built models, A-Class motorhomes, professional campervan conversions and American-style RVs. Classic motorhome breakdown cover is available for models up to 20 years old. Whatever the size or style, we can find the right policy.

Is European cover included?

Yes. Our motorhome policies include continental use for up to 270 days as standard, with no green card required, covering driving across EU countries. Some policies also offer extended European breakdown cover as an optional add-on. Call 01323 416706 for the details.

What's the difference between a campervan and a motorhome?

A campervan is typically smaller, with basic sleeping, washing and cooking provisions. A motorhome is larger and purpose-built for self-contained living, with defined sleeping, living and driving areas plus permanent sinks, cupboards and facilities; the DVLA classifies them as motor caravans. Both need specialist insurance, because standard car or van cover may not protect the living equipment and contents.

Are my belongings covered?

Yes. Comprehensive policies include personal effects cover for equipment and belongings related to camping and caravanning, plus in-car audio and visual equipment cover up to £500. Awning cover protects against storm damage and windscreen cover handles chips and cracks. High-value items may need declaring separately.

How much does motorhome insurance cost?

It depends on the motorhome's value, age and type, your driving history, and how you use the vehicle. You can bring the premium down by increasing your voluntary excess, fitting approved security devices, and keeping the motorhome somewhere secure. Send the form or call 01323 416706 and we'll price it properly.
