Every kind of campervan, covered properly
Standard van insurance sees a van. It doesn't see the bed, the hob, the wiring you sank a winter into, or the awning strapped to the side, which is why campervans need their own policy. We arrange cover for professional conversions, classic campervans built before 1992 (VW T2 Split Bays, Devon T2s and Westfalia Jokers included), self-build projects, and every roof type: high-top, raised-roof and fixed-roof.
Self-builds get quoted too; they simply need to be inspected and approved before the policy starts. Tell us what you've built and we'll take it from there with our panel of specialist insurers.
Cover built for life on the road
If your campervan is used on public roads, at least third-party cover is a legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act 1988. But the point of a specialist policy is everything beyond that. Comprehensive cover protects against fire, theft, accidental damage and vandalism, and includes the things a campervan trip actually depends on: awning, gas bottle and generator cover up to £2,000, personal effects cover for your camping equipment and belongings, and emergency accommodation for up to 14 days if the worst happens mid-trip.
Classic campervan policies add legal expenses cover up to £100,000 and up to £1,000 of personal belongings cover. And a specialist policy earns its keep even when the van is in storage, protecting against theft, fire and weather damage between trips. European travel cover is available too: standard on some policies, an optional add-on on others, so check before you book the ferry.
Agreed value, and keeping the premium down
For classic and restored campervans, market value rarely reflects what the van is genuinely worth. Agreed value cover fixes that: you and the insurer agree the van's value, spare parts included, when the policy starts, and if it's written off you receive that full agreed amount, not a book price.
Whatever you drive, a few habits keep the premium sensible:
- Fit approved security: a tracking device or approved alarm
- Store the van somewhere secure, ideally a locked garage
- Work out your annual mileage accurately rather than guessing high
- Pay annually rather than monthly if you can
- A higher voluntary excess lowers the premium, but only pick an excess you could actually afford to pay

See all FAQsWhat types of campervan do you insure?
Professional conversions, classic campervans built before 1992 (including VW T2 Split Bays, VW Devon T2s and VW Westfalia Jokers), self-build projects, and all roof types: high-top, raised-roof and fixed-roof. For self-builds, call 01323 416706 so we can assess the vehicle and quote it properly.
Is campervan insurance a legal requirement?
Yes. If the campervan is used on public roads, you legally need at least third-party motor insurance under the Road Traffic Act 1988. Even in storage, a specialist policy is worth having: it protects against theft, fire and weather damage while the van sits between trips.
Are my belongings covered inside the campervan?
Yes. Comprehensive policies include personal effects cover for camping equipment and belongings kept inside the van, and classic campervan policies provide up to £1,000 of personal belongings cover. High-value items may need declaring separately; tell us what you carry and we'll confirm. Note that items left unattended outside the locked van aren't covered.
Can I get European travel cover?
Yes. Some policies include European cover as standard; others offer it as an optional add-on. It protects trips abroad including roadside assistance, recovery and emergency accommodation. Check your policy before travelling, or call 01323 416706 and we'll add it if you need it.
How can I reduce the cost of campervan insurance?
Fit additional security such as a tracking device or approved alarm, store the van somewhere secure like a locked garage, calculate your annual mileage accurately, and pay annually rather than monthly. A higher voluntary excess also cuts the premium; just make sure you could afford the excess if you had to claim.
What is agreed value cover?
You and the insurer agree the campervan's value, including spare parts, when the policy starts. If the van is written off, you receive the full agreed value rather than the market value at the time of the claim. It's particularly worthwhile for classic and restored campervans, where market value rarely reflects the true worth of the vehicle.
