Cheaper practice, calmer test day
Formal lessons teach you the syllabus; practice makes you a driver. Learner driver insurance covers provisional licence holders aged 17 to 21 to practise in a car they have access to, whether a parent's, a friend's, or their own, with a qualified supervising driver alongside. It costs a fraction of extra lessons, and far less than adding a young driver to an annual policy as a named driver.
We arrange this cover in partnership with G-Shorty, a specialist learner provider. Policies run from 1 hour to 24 weeks: hourly, daily or weekly, topped up as you need, so you only pay for the practice time you actually use. Cover is fully comprehensive with a £250 excess, on cars up to £50,000 in value.
Because it's your own separate policy, any claim is made against your cover, not the car owner's. Mum's or Dad's no claims bonus never enters the equation.
The supervision rules, spelled out
Learner cover only applies while you're supervised, and the rules on who can supervise are strict. Get these wrong and you're not covered:
- Your supervisor must be over 25 and have held a full UK licence for at least 3 years
- They must have been a UK resident for at least 2 years, with no drink or drug driving (DR-coded) convictions in the past 5 years
- They sit in the front passenger seat at all times
- L plates must be displayed front and rear (D plates in Wales)
- The car needs a valid MOT and its own insurance policy in force, and must not be SORN
- The learner must have no convictions, claims or penalty points, and have been a UK resident for at least 5 years
What happens when you pass
The moment you pass your practical test, your learner policy stops: you can't drive home on it as a full licence holder. There is one sensible exception: a 3-hour grace period after the test that covers your supervising driver for a specific journey, such as driving you home from the test centre.
Before you drive again yourself, you'll need annual car insurance in your own name. We arrange that too: call 01323 416706 and we'll have options ready for the day you pass.

See all FAQsCan I drive on my own with learner driver insurance?
No. The policy only covers you while supervised by a qualified driver: someone over 25 who has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years, has been a UK resident for at least 2 years, and has no drink or drug driving (DR-coded) convictions in the past 5 years. They must sit in the front passenger seat at all times.
What happens when I pass my driving test?
Your learner policy stops immediately when you pass. There's a 3-hour grace period covering your supervising driver for a specific journey, like driving you home from the test centre, but you'll need your own annual insurance before you drive again yourself. Call us on 01323 416706 and we'll arrange it.
Does learner insurance protect the car owner's no claims discount?
Yes, completely. Your learner policy is separate from the car owner's insurance, so any claim is made on your policy, not theirs. It's the main reason learner cover is so popular: you get real practice without putting a parent's or friend's no claims bonus at risk.
How much does learner driver insurance cost?
It depends on your age, the car and how long you need cover. What we can say: short-term learner cover is significantly cheaper than being added to an annual policy as a named driver, since young drivers push annual premiums up substantially, and cheaper per hour of practice than extra formal lessons. Send the form for a quick price.
Can I get learner insurance on my own car?
Yes. If you own the car and hold a provisional licence, you can take out learner cover on your own vehicle. The car still needs an underlying insurance policy in force, a valid MOT, and must not be SORN, and you still need a qualified supervisor with you whenever you drive.
Which cars can I practise in?
Private cars up to £50,000 in value, subject to insurance group limits. The car must have no more than 5 seats, a valid MOT and an existing insurance policy in force. Imported, left-hand-drive and heavily modified cars aren't eligible, and neither are commercial vehicles, vans, or anything SORN or seized.
Ready for more time behind the wheel?
