Why van insurance stops working at 3.5 tonnes
Standard van insurance does not cover heavy goods vehicles, and it doesn't touch the commercial risks that come with haulage: the cargo in the back, the drivers on the rota, your liability to the public. Once a vehicle is over 3.5 tonnes, you need a specialist HGV policy that covers all four: the vehicle, the cargo, the drivers and the liability.
We arrange lorry insurance for both carriage of own goods and hire and reward operations, on a comprehensive, third-party fire and theft, or third-party only basis. Whether it's one truck or a national fleet, the policy is built around how the vehicle actually earns.
Every body type, one broker
Underwriters rate lorries by what they are and what they do, so a policy has to fit the body type: a tipper is not a tanker. We insure curtain-siders, flatbeds, tippers, tankers, skip carriers, bulk carriers, refrigerated lorries, cement mixers, gritter lorries, breakdown trucks and low loaders, and electric and hybrid trucks as the fleets turn over.
We've worked with lorry operators since 2019, connecting thousands of customers with the right cover from our panel of specialist insurers. Describe the vehicle and the work once, and we'll present it to the insurers who want that risk.
Extensions worth weighing before you quote
The base policy covers the vehicle and your liability on the road. The extensions are where a haulage policy earns its keep, and they're cheaper to arrange upfront than to regret after a loss:
- Goods in transit: protects your cargo against loss, theft or damage while it's being moved
- Public liability and employer's liability for the operation around the truck
- European cover for cross-border work: check the territorial limits with our team
- Loss of licence protection: compensates you for an agreed period if you lose your licence and can't operate
- Breakdown recovery for the vehicle itself
- Running two or more lorries? A fleet policy brings one renewal date, simpler admin, and named driver or any-driver options

See all FAQsWhat is lorry insurance?
Lorry insurance, also called HGV or truck insurance, is a specialist commercial vehicle policy for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. It covers the vehicle and your drivers, and can extend to your cargo and your liability. Standard van insurance won't cover an HGV. Call 01323 416706 for a quote.
What types of lorries do you insure?
Curtain-siders, flatbeds, tippers, tankers, skip carriers, bulk carriers, refrigerated lorries, cement mixers, gritter lorries, breakdown trucks, low loaders, and electric or hybrid HGVs. If it's over 3.5 tonnes and works for a living, we can place it.
Do you offer fleet lorry insurance?
Yes. If you operate two or more lorries, a fleet policy can save money and gives you one renewal date and simpler admin. Named driver or any-driver options are available. Call 01323 416706 to talk through your fleet.
Is goods in transit cover included?
Not as standard; it's an optional extension that protects your cargo against loss, theft or damage in transit. For haulage and delivery work it's usually essential, so tell us what you carry and we'll include it in your quote.
Can I get European cover for my lorry?
Yes. European cover is available as an optional extension for lorries operating across multiple countries. Territorial limits vary between insurers, so check the detail with our team on 01323 416706 before you commit to a route.
What is loss of licence cover?
An optional add-on that compensates you for an agreed period if you lose your driving licence and can't operate your lorry. It's not included as standard. For an owner-driver whose licence is the whole business, it's worth a serious look; ask our team for details.
